The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
After a skip week and a previous episode that focused on Guy’s younger days and the things his father taught him, we got to see some of his power formation that allows him to step things up a few notches to really compete. A form that doesn’t exactly delight others on his side because of the cost of it to the person performing it. While I wasn’t exactly thrilled with a big in-depth installment with Guy as a kid, the previous episode certainly worked better than I expected and it helped to show some of the cyclical aspects of his personality that are passed on to Lee. Guy’s never been a favorite but I’ve liked aspects of him, and his friendship with Kakashi, and seeing some of those earlier moments was welcome, even if it broke up the flow of the present day storyline again.
Of course, as powered up as Guy is at this point and the learning curve that comes with it, he’s still not able to do a whole lot against Madara. Madara’s been built to this really high level and everything has been pushing towards Naruto being the one that, with the help of friends, be the one to take him down. Mind you, I haven’t read the manga or any spoilers about it, but there’s no way to believe that Guy will have a decisive hand in this fight. What we do get is the inspiration aspects, the hope and the determination coming through that will help others rally even further as events get even more serious. This makes for some solidly engaging action sequences between the two, powered up with energy as they are in red and green, and with the support side coming up trying to end this once and for all, it falls under the solid effort category.
Naruto actually manages to return to the show for a bit of time here in his in-between state where he’s engaging with Hagoromo, who claims to be the Sage of Sixth Paths from legends ages ago. We’ve heard of it all before from the Pervy Sage and others and that gives Naruto a bit more potential material to work with in the fight to come. It plays things all mystical of course, without getting deep into it, but essentially Naruto is being entrusted with things that will help him in what’s to come. This dominates the second half of the episode and while it does set things into motion for what’s to come, with its nods to Ashura and Indra and Naruto’s path alongside Sasuke, and it’s certainly not bad. But it again feels like that frustrating part where so much of this should have been laid out and seeded better much earlier in this massive overall run (and yes, that means in the manga) in order to provide the right kind of impact now.
In Summary:
With half the episode given over to the time between Naruto and Hagoromo, we basically get a decent little information dump that helps put this fight in the big picture of the world overall while also tying Naruto and Sasuke together as avatars of the past in a sense. It’s interesting and I do wonder how much of it was seeded before, but the things that stand out at this point are all the awful filler episodes and some of the sweeping ideas in general as opposed to the details and nuance of 500+ episodes. The first half works nicely to bring us some action and allows Guy and the others to push back against Madara, but it’s understood that he’ll be back at full strength soon enough in order to have a proper fight with the lead of the series and those closest to him. A decent episode but one trapped in oh so many clichés and predictable elements.http://uzumakinaruto17.blogspot.ch/2015/07/naruto-shippuden-episode-420.html
